KOTA KINABALU: Unlike the general public, who typically avoid choppy seas and tall waves, surfers flock to Tanjung Aru beach for the adrenaline rush.

Photographer Charles Mawan observed that while surfers usually prefer the waves at Karambunai and Kudat, the waves off Kota Kinabalu over the weekend were perfect for riding.

"I informed the regulars that they could surf at Tanjung Aru. They came and enjoyed surfing. Some are skilled and used to represent Sabah in surfing competitions. I'm glad to have captured great pictures of them," added Charles, who is also a surfer.

He said that this month is an ideal time for surfers to ride their boards here instead of travelling elsewhere.

"However, riding those big waves is only safe for those with basic skills and knowledge of sea conditions."
