KUALA LUMPUR: The Communication and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (Content Forum) supports regulating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in content creation and distribution.

Chairman Rafiq Razali said they agreed with Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) member Derek John Fernandez's call to curb AI misuse like deepfakes for public safety.

These steps align with the Content Forum's mission for self-regulation of content, promoting transparency and consumer trust, he said.

"The Code (Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Content Code 2022) highlights the importance of transparency and already requires disclosure when social media influencers are used for marketing purposes.

"Extending these principles to include AI-generated content will further strengthen consumer trust and protect the community from misleading information," he said.

Additionally, Rafiq emphasised the collective responsibility of ensuring safe use of AI in content creation.

"AI has immense potential to revolutionise the content industry, driving unprecedented levels of creativity and efficiency.

"Yet, this potential must be managed with careful consideration. It is imperative that lawmakers, AI service providers, regulators, and content creators work collaboratively to allocate sufficient resources and ensure these technologies are used responsibly.

Meanwhile, Content Forum CEO Mediha Mahmood said when the Internet was first introduced, no one could anticipate the challenges such as cyberbullying and misinformation would arise.

"These issues continue to evolve, and Malaysia remains committed to addressing them through effective legislation and regulation.

"Pre-empting potential harms through swift and effective regulation is not just prudent—it is essential," she said in a statement today.
