GEORGE TOWN: A government backbencher has urged the state government to blacklist contractors who are not capable of undertaking any development project.

Teh Lai Heng (DAP - Komtar) said this followed complaints by the people on the delay in completing some projects in the state.

He said it was not merely the people's perception but a reality of what really happened.

"Take for example the upgrading project for the toilet in the Komtar building. The contractor was given three months to complete the project. The people asked me if such work needed three months to complete.

"Three months passed yet the project could not be completed. It was subsequently extended to four and five months respectively.

"That is just a very simple example. There are projects which have been delayed for years.

"The state government should relook into the matter. Besides that, the state government can blacklist incapable contractors," he said in his debate at the state legislative assembly sitting here today.

Teh, however, did not specify such projects.

Elaborating, he said officers tasked with properly monitoring any development projects should also be acted upon if they failed to do their job.

"Disciplinary action should be taken against such officers in efforts to protect the image of the state government," he added.
