GEORGE TOWN: A notice on the vacancy of the Sungai Bakap state seat following the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff has been submitted to the Election Commission (EC).
The notice was submitted by state legislative assembly Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang to state Election Commission director Dr Siti Nazariah Abdul Zalim on the sidelines of the assembly sitting here today (May 27).
Pas' Zamri, 56, died at Seberang Jaya Hospital last Friday.
He contested the seat in the 2023 state election and won against PKR's Nurhidayah Che Rus with a 1,563-vote majority.
Law, in expressing sadness over Zamri's death, said it was a huge loss to the people of Sungai Bakap, in particular, and the state legislative assembly, in general.
"We are deeply saddened by his passing. This is not a good news for the state legislative assembly.
"He is a well-respected and well-loved assemblyman," he said before submitting the notice to Siti Nazariah.
Law said this (submitting the notice) was in line with Clause 5, Article 19 of the Penang constitution.
