KUALA LUMPUR: The Finance Ministry will announce the mechanism for the diesel subsidy rationalisation "in the nearest time".

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the matter will be announced by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

"The relevant minister, the finance minister II, will provide an explanation in the nearest time," Anwar said at a press conference at the Postnormal Times Madani Exhibition here today.

Earlier this week, Anwar announced the cabinet's decision to implement targeted subsidies for fuel starting with diesel, which is projected to save the country RM4 billion annually.

Anwar said the targeted fuel subsidies would start with diesel and would apply to only users in the peninsula, and not those in Sabah and Sarawak.

Anwar added that while the diesel subsidy rationalisation was announced by him, the work will be delegated to the relevant ministries.

"Some people have asked why (the prime minister did not give a full explanation). But not all work will be done by the prime minister.

"I only give the bigger picture and the framework. Follow-up actions will come later. This is why I differentiate between policy matters and details."
