PONTIAN: A man died in a fire at a three-story shop in Taman Mutiara, here today.

Pontian Bahru Fire and Rescue station senior operations commander Mahadir Mamat said they received an emergency call at 12.30pm reporting the incident. The fire occurred on the second floor.

"On the second floor, there were six rooms believed to have been converted into rental rooms, with each rental room estimated to be 3.5 square metres.

"During the incident, there was a (deceased) male victim, whose age is unknown, found in a room near the kitchen," he said.

He added that the body was handed over to the police for further investigation.

Mahadir said the extent of fire damage is estimated at 60 per cent. A total of 19 firemen and three fire engines were involved in the operation.

"The firefighting operation concluded at 5pm. The cause of the incident and the extent of the damage are still under investigation."
