SERIAN: The Michinoeki Sabal weekly market, inaugurated by the Japan-Malaysia Association (JMA) in Kampung Sabal, is set to become a notable attraction for both locals and tourists, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan said the 'Michinoeki' concept, a resting place featuring local Japanese products like food and souvenirs, will offer a unique and appealing experience to visitors.

Supported by the Japanese government, the market also provides local farmers and artisans an opportunity to sell their products, enhancing their daily income.

"This is a positive step in developing the local economy and fostering community growth. We hope the market will become a popular destination that benefits all stakeholders involved," Snowdan said.

Additionally, Snowdan commended JMA for its significant contributions in Sarawak, particularly their commitment to planting over 850,000 trees in national parks and reserves through the Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) programme.

The collaboration between JMA, the Sarawak government, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, and local communities is a positive move towards restoring and preserving Sarawak's tropical forests, benefiting the local communities and future generations.

Earlier, JMA president Takakazu Ogawa highlighted the first phase of the Water Environment and Life Improvement Project in the Balai Ringin area, supported by the Japanese government.

This project has improved the gravity water system in four villages, increasing water use, eliminating the need to purchase water during dry seasons, and enhancing hygiene standards.
