SEPANG: A package which arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Cargo Terminal with a note claiming it is a bomb caused panic today.

The note on the package read: 'Be careful. Do not throw it; it might explode. This is a bomb.'

The package caused further panic when it was found to contain items such as batteries and wires during scanning.

An operator manning the scanning machine at the facility quickly alerted the authorities at the Aeropolis police station at 1.30pm.

KLIA district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azman Shari'at said a team was dispatched to the location upon receiving the report, and the K9 unit was also dispatched.

"It was found that there were no explosive materials, but there was a threatening statement on the package, and the Bomb Disposal Unit of the Royal Malaysia Police took action according to standard operating procedures (SOP)," he said in a statement today.

He added that shots fired using a 'pigstick' attached to a robotic device did not result in an explosion.

"It was found that the package contained a laptop and charging cables, and investigations revealed it was addressed to an individual in Limbang, Sarawak.

The sender, who is in Kuala Lumpur was contacted, and he confirmed the contents of the package.

Police said the sender is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal threats.
