KOTA KINABALU: A family of four escaped fiery death when the van they were travelling in burst into flames in a road accident at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here at around midnight.

The van driver, 33; his 31-year-old wife and two children suffered minor injuries when their vehicle was involved in an accident with a car.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department operation centre spokesman said a team was deployed to the scene after the department received a distress call over the accident at 12.57am.

"As a result of the accident, the fire destroyed 60 per cent of the van, especially the engine area of the vehicle.

"All those involved in the accident were rescued by members of the public before the arrival of the rescue team from the Kota Kinabalu fire and rescue station," the spokesman said.

He added that the rescue team provided initial treatment to the family of four before they were sent to to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for further treatment.

The rescue operation, he said, concluded at 1.25am.
