KUALA LUMPUR: Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has issued a stern warning to politicians against extremist views, especially on issues related to race and religion.

In a Facebook post, Sultan Ibrahim said political leaders should unite the people and not divide them.

In a post on His Majesty's Facebook, it was mentioned that the audience was focused on current developments related to sensitive race and religious issues.

"I would like to advise all parties to focus on bringing the rakyat together towards unity instead of dividing them. I wish to see the rakyat unite and living in harmony.

"I hope that political leaders are not extreme in giving views on religious and racial issues. Not only Umno and DAP, but also all parties.

"Leaders must become the bridge or link which connects people by setting examples through matured behavior," he said after granting an audience to top Umno and DAP leaders at Istana Negara today.

Sultan Ibrahim said it was each Malaysian's responsibility to protect the unity in society because this would ensure continued peace.

"The recent events should have opened the eyes of all parties that everyone from the public have a responsibility to protect the unity of the country.

"Strong unity among the people will be the catalyst for Malaysia's universal wellbeing. Ahead of this glorious Hari Raya, forgive each other and open a new chapter."

Present during the audience with the king were Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Melaka Umno Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, DAP deputy secretary-general Liew Chin Tong and Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh.
