KOTA KINABALU: Over two tonnes of recyclable waste was successfully collected through a household recycling competition, held as part of this year's 'My City, My Responsibility 1.0' awareness month campaign, Sabah Media reported.

Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah said this achievement marked a 100 per cent increase compared to last year, demonstrating a significant rise in public awareness regarding daily waste separation.

"This record clearly shows a significant improvement in public awareness to separate household waste daily.

"It also proves that waste materials have the potential to become a financial resource if managed correctly," he said during the closing ceremony of the 'My City, My Responsibility 1.0' campaign yesterday.

The speech was read by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) deputy director-general of operations Robert Lipon.

Sabin said the campaign underscores DBKK's commitment to shifting public mindset towards shared responsibility in maintaining city cleanliness.

"In conjunction with Kota Kinabalu's 24th city day anniversary, DBKK also launched the 'My Clean Village' Challenge for village areas on Feb 3. This contest aims to create social awareness among village residents around Kota Kinabalu through ongoing cleanup campaigns and activities," he said.

A total of 23 villages, including private village areas, responded to this challenge.

Various events were planned throughout the 'My City, My Responsibility 1.0' Awareness Month campaign.

These included the household recycling competition, upcycling of used clothing, treasure hunts, children's fashion shows, colouring and painting competitions, a TikTok slogan challenge for "My city, My responsibility" or MCMR, guessing the weight and number of cigarette butts, as well as health and environmental exhibitions.
