KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition member of parliament today has called on the government to ramp up efforts to accelerate registration on the Central Database Hub (Padu).

Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok) when debating the Royal Address expressed concern with the low number of registrants, afraid that it would affect the timeline of the programme.

"For the record, we (the opposition) want 'Padu yang padu' as a determinant for the success of this targeted subsidy programme.

"As of Feb 22, a total of 3.72 million individuals have updated their Padu information, which is about 10 per cent of the total population.

"Almost half of them are civil servants which is 1.2 million. The remaining 90 per cent have not updated their (Padu) information.

"We are worried that it would affect the timeline (implementation of the programme) and we call for public participation (in Padu), as well as more aggressive information dissemination on the matter," he said.

Meanwhile, another opposition MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas) when debating the Royal Address reminded the government about the cyber security aspect which is a priority to ensure that the people would voluntarily be part of public data initiatives such as Padu introduced by the Economy Ministry.

"This aspect needs to be given serious attention by the government because Padu data can be misused if there is no guarantee of personal data protection.

"If this concern (data safety) is not alleviated, then the people will not trust to give their data and information to the government," he said.
