ALOR STAR: Former Jeneri assemblyman Mohd Hadzir Jaafar has died at the age of 83 in his residence at Kampung Padang Keras, Chepir, Sik.

In a statement today, Sik Barisan Nasional confirmed that Hadzir died about 1pm.

"We regret to announce that Haji Mohd Hadzir, also known affectionately as Cikgu Det, former Jeneri assemblyman, former Sik Umno division permanent chairman and former Sik Umno division secretary, has left us forever today," it stated.

Sik Umno division chief Datuk Muhamad Khizri Abu Kassim extended his heartfelt sympathies to the family over the loss.

"The late Cikgu Det, as he was fondly known, was no stranger in Sik. He was beloved and known by all. A former teacher who dedicated his life to politics for many years," he shared in a Facebook post today.

Hadzir was elected as the Jeneri assemblyman following his victory in the Ninth General Election in 1995.

He triumphed over Pas candidate Harum Jusoh, with a majority of 1,061 votes, garnering a total of 6,751 votes to Harum's 5,690.

He served in the position until 1999, when he was defeated in the subsequent general election.

His most recent political role was as Sik Umno division permanent chairman in 2022.
