KUALA LUMPUR: Police are still in the process of identifying the cause of the fire that destroyed five residential units at the Sri Sabah flats, in Cheras, here, last night.

Cheras police chief, Assistant Commissioner Zam Halim Jamaludin said further investigation is being carried out by the Forensic Unit of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department.

"So far, there have been no new developments. The cause of the fire is still under investigation," he said briefly when contacted today.

Earlier, it was reported that several units in Block 70 caught fire last night.

The fire and rescue team acknowledged facing challenges, especially when the fire prevention system did not function properly.

Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department Explosive Operations and Rescue Division director, Nordin Pauzi said the flat building was equipped with the relevant system, but its failure to function properly forced the team to pump water from below.

Before that, it was reported that parked vehicles belonging to residents, on the roadside near the Sri Sabah flats, had hindered the fire and rescue team from extinguishing the fire at Block 70 today.

The rescue team had to request the assistance of a tow truck from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to remove the vehicles blocking the passage to allow access for the fire trucks.

Quick action by members of the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department successfully controlled the fire from spreading to other houses and floors.

It is understood that the fire did not involve any loss of life.
