KUALA LUMPUR: Batu member of parliament P. Prabakaran has been appointed chairman of the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit's (Mitra) special committee.

The Prime Minister's Office, in a statement, said the appointment takes effect immediately.

"This is to replace Datuk R. Ramanan, who has assumed the role of deputy entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister.

"The prime minister hopes this appointment will ensure that Mitra continues to fulfil its mandate and responsibilities in uplifting the dignity and socioeconomic status of the Indian community," it said.

Mitra, previously known as the Socioeconomic Development of the Indian Community Unit (SEDIC), was initially under the National Unity Ministry.

It came under the purview of the Prime Minister's Department in September 2022, but was transferred back under the National Unity Ministry last December.

Among Mitra's major tasks is to identify current issues and challenges affecting the Indian community, implementing socioeconomic development initiatives and coordinating cooperation between the government and private sector towards the community's development in general.
