KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) clarifies that the electricity tariff imposed on consumers from January 1 to June 30, 2024, is at a rate of 7.21 sen/kWh.

This is because following the special state sitting session on January 3 to discuss electricity matters, there have been statements from a few lawmakers claiming that the tariff had been increased to "RM7.21/kWh."

Its Chief Executive Officer, Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said that confusion has caused concern among consumers.

"The Imbalance Cost Pass Through (ICPT) mechanism implemented in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan is in sen calculations and not ringgit.

"ICPT is a mechanism approved by the Federal Government and implemented by the Energy Commission starting January 1, 2022, under the Incentive-Based Regulation (IBR) framework.

"For Sabah and Labuan, IBR is implemented from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2024, for the first regulatory period (RP1) lasting three years.

"However, ICPT rebates or surcharges were not imposed until 2022 as the government absorbed ICPT costs," he said in a statement.

On January 1, 2023, the ICPT surcharge began to be imposed at a rate of 10.04 sen/kWh for a six-month period until June 2023.

The rate dropped to 2.11 sen/kWh for the period from July 1, 2023, to December 31, 2023.

"The government had also agreed to absorb the electricity subsidy costs of RM161.70 million for certain user categories to minimise the impact of ICPT.

"This means that almost all domestic and low-voltage non-domestic users will not be affected by the implementation of this latest ICPT surcharge."

Meanwhile, Mohd Yaakob also said the regulatory authority, the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), will review rebates or charges every six months.
