KOTA KINABALU: Residents of the state capital here have yet to settle a cumulative outstanding assessment tax of RM75.68 million owed to the local authority.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said the amount included the RM54.3 million in current outstanding assessment tax, RM19.21 million in imposed fees, and RM2.16 million in notification charges.

Last year, he said, City Hall filed 11 tax demand notices amounting to RM30,485.73 and seven legal actions for execution orders totaling RM64,518.24.

"In the same year, 68 cases filed in previous years were settled, involving a total collection of RM634,051.52.

"City Hall encourages all ratepayers to settle their assessment tax promptly to avoid incurring additional fees and legal action," he said after a "Friendly Session with the Media" here last night.

Present were City Hall director-general Junaina Abbe and Sabah Journalists Association president Datuk Muguntan Vanar.

To encourage the payment of overdue taxes, Sabin said for the first quarter of the year, a 75 per cent discount will be granted on the imposed charges and notification fees, with the condition that the overdue tax is paid in a lump sum.

"A rebate of five per cent on the current year's tax is also offered if the current year's assessment tax is paid in lump sum on or before March 31, 2024."
