KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has expressed concern that the Malays might face extinction within the next decade unless they remain united.

He also warned of potential subjugation if there is insufficient attention given to the fate of the Malay community.

During a session titled 'Sesi Minda Negarawan: Iktibar 150 tahun Perjanjian Pangkor' at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, Dr Mahathir emphasised the need for action to address the challenges Malays face.

He highlighted the loss of four states in the north, including Riau Islands, Singapore, and Penang, urging Malays to take appropriate measures.

"If they (Malays) realise (this), take appropriate action. We know what can be done. For example, if there are representatives who do not speak (about Malays), we want them to speak.

"We are as if being subdued by other races without war. We need to convey this message," Dr Mahathir said.

Expressing his hope for greater unity among Malays, Dr Mahathir noted the lower voter turnout among Malays in elections compared to the Chinese.

"Only 65 per cent of Malays came out while the Chinese come out at 98 per cent. That's the fact."

He urged participants at the event to share the discussions about the country's future with others to awaken the Malay community.

Encouraging a ripple effect, Dr Mahathir called on each of today's 400 attendees to connect with 10 others, spreading awareness about the country's upcoming challenges in the next decade.

"Only then will this message reach the Malays and awaken them."
