KUALA LUMPUR: Attempts to change the government made by certain quarters should be done through a motion in parliament, instead of using statutory declarations (SDs).

However, veteran politician Tan Sri Syed Hamid Syed Albar believed that it is crucial for the country to maintain the current administration and stable political landscape for the progress of the nation and the well-being of the people.

The former Umno Supreme Council member also said that any developments happening in the country will have an impact on the economic progress, as well as the inflows of foreign investments in the country.

"A stable administrative system and politics are crucial so that no negative perception of the country is formed.

"This (stable administration and politics) will also instil confidence in investors, both domestic and foreign, thus contributing to the progress of the nation and the well-being of the people," he told Berita Harian, today.

Meanwhile, Syed Hamid added that Malaysia does not need a law that could limit democratic practices through the enactment of the Fixed-Term Parliament Act.

He said this is because the global democracy practised in Malaysia's administration all this while was sufficient.

"I believe we should just adhere to the practice of democracy (in Malaysia)... there is no need for laws to limit democracy.

"The crucial thing is that we follow the practice of parliamentary democracy. If the government loses the majority in parliament, the leaders need to step down.

"Hence, it is up to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to call upon the leader of another party to form a government or dissolve the parliament to hold a general election," he said.

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had called for a bill to be drafted to ensure that a government completes its five-year term.

This, he said, was to prevent political instability and any attempt to topple a ruling government before its term ended.

Following this, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the Legal Affairs Division would undertake research as groundwork for the bill, with its findings being presented to the cabinet to deliberate on the policy direction.
