KLANG: The non-governmental organisations (NGOs) played a crucial role in contributing to the Western powers' increased support for the Palestinians during the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said that an increasing number of Western leaders had softened their stance towards ceasefire, such as the United Kingdom who had recently abstained in the United Nations (UN) Security Council vote calling for an immediate ceasefire.

"There has been a tremendous change in Europe, thanks to the NGOs' tireless efforts until the leaders are forced to change their support for the ceasefire.

"Over half a million demonstrated in the London city, same as in Madrid and Brussels.

"For the first time ever, the United Kingdom abstained, only America used its veto power to vote against ceasefire.

"We will fight for any race that is oppressed," he said during the Amanah National Convention at Wyndham Acnar Hotel today.

Also present were Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook who is also DAP secretary general, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) secretary-general, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) communications director and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari who is also PKR vice-president.

With the recent development in Palestine, Mohamad is confident that the people will soon be able to live their lives peacefully.

He said that Palestinians could lead a peaceful life similar to Malaysians after the war ends.

"I am confident we can soon return to Baitul Maqdis and the people of Palestinians can live peacefully with the Christians and Jews.

"Follow Malaysia; we live in peace and unity, regardless of ethnicity or religion.

"There are no supreme Chinese, supreme Malays, or supreme Indians," he added.
