KUALA LUMPUR: The government believes congestion charges are necessary in order to reach sustainable city goals in the Klang Valley.

Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said that though nothing has been decided on the matter, he said that it is something that the government needs to consider for a more sustainable city moving forward.

"There have been long talks on congestion charge with the completion of Mass Rapid Transit Line 3 (MRT3).

"That is not my decision, but it is something we have to consider if we want to talk about a more sustainable city moving forward," he said in his speech during the launching ceremony of Prasarana Sustainability Blueprint here today.

Also present were Prasarana chairman Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim, Prasarana group president and chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah, and United Nations Resident Coordinator in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam, Karima El Korri.
