BANGI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stressed that there is no need to make amendments to the Federal Constitution in order to ensure a Prime Minister can only be held by a Malay.

He said that despite the current status quo of the constitution, the Prime Minister position has always been held by those from Malay ethnicity.

"No need (amend) there is no serious proposal and no discussion.

"Ever since Merdeka, the candidates has always been a Malay, after this the candidates from government will be a Malay and even from the opposition, it will also be a Malay.

"It is important to preserve the people's rights, every ethnicity and every constituencies," he said after Friday prayers at Surau Al-Kauthar today," he said after joining a congregation for Friday prayers at Surau Al-Kauthar today.

Anwar was responding to media queries on the suggestion by Parti Pribumi Bersatu (Bersatu) Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal to amend the Federal Constitution to ensure that only Malays can become the prime minister.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal's proposal comes after DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang said that the constitution does not prevent any non-Malay from becoming prime minister.

Meanwhile, Anwar hit back at the opposition for creating an issue out of nothing.

He said the opposition were stirring up issues when the government expressed its intention to carry out redelineation exercise.

Anwar said the opposition purposely raised such issues to create disharmony amongst the Malays.

"They do not understand the constitution. The constitution allows the review of the (last redelineation exercise only) by the end of 2026.

"Why are they harping on this? (Nak sibuk sebab apa?). Why not look for ways to improve the economy and to ease the burden of the people instead?

"Aren't they tired (of raising unnecessary issues)? he added.

When asked about the recent warning from health authorities on the increasing number of Covid-19 cases, Anwar said the new Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad had advised people to be cautious over the situation.

"The situation is not serious, but we have to be careful," Anwar added.

Earlier, he had some candid moments with residents of Bandar Baru Bangi and joined them for lunch at Restoran Mak Kimbong here.

Also present was Bangi member of parliament Syahredzan Johan.
