BESUT: Another victim of the building collapse incident in Pulau Perhentian here last Thursday was confirmed dead this morning.

Besut police chief Superintendent Abdul Rozak Muhammad, said the the victim, an Indonesian named Bahul Jamil, 42, was confirmed dead at 2:14 am today.

He said the victim died while receiving treatment at Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM).

"The cause of death was determined to be Rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle injury due to compression/serious tearing injuries).

"According to the medical experts, this condition caused proteins and salts from the damaged muscles to leak into the bloodstream, subsequently poisoning the heart and kidneys and leading to heart failure, resulting in the victim's death," he said in a statement today.

Rozak said the victim was part of the victims who were group successfully rescued on the afternoon of the incident.

"After being evacuated from the site, the victim was taken to the Emergency Unit of Besut Hospital before being rushed to HUSM for further treatment," he said.

He added that Bahul Jamil is the second fatality from the incident.

Earlier, another Indonesian construction worker, Suparno, 48, was confirmed dead after his body was retrieved from the rubble a day after the incident.

Last Thursday, the media reported that the construction site of a three-story restaurant at a resort on the island suddenly collapsed at 4:30 am.

The collapse buried seven workers, including six foreigners and a local, who were sleeping at the nearly-completed construction site.
