NEW details of Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) first very own electric vehicle (EV) have been disclosed. This includes its possible pricing.

President and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad hinted that the EV will be priced somewhere above RM50,000 and below RM100,000, citing the range to be the most reasonable for its consumers.

It will be some time before we'll see the final product though, with Zainal commenting that the EV ecosystem needs to be up first before Perodua can afford to launch the model.

Concerns include placing a second-hand value pricing mechanism in place, safety with EVs, range anxiety and battery recycling to name a few.

Accompanying the revelation was the public unveiling of the brand's Electric Motion Online or emo-1 model at the Malaysia Autoshow 2024 held at MAEPS, Serdang.

Perodua's concept EV model project, which is a Myvi-convert, began in September 2022 in collaboration with the likes of Australian company EV North and local universities such as UPM, UniKL and Uniten.

According to known specification the model runs on an AC permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and a 55.7 kWh capacity Prismatic Li-Ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) HV battery pack.

The electric motor delivers a peak/rated power of 120 kW/50 kW, a maximum torque of 220Nm and a driving range of 350 km.

Perodua says these specifications are subject to change in the final product - which may only launch either late this year or next year.
