KUALA LUMPUR: The police have urged the public to stay away from the industrial area in Ara Damansara following the detection of an ammonia gas leak last night.

Petaling Jaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Fakhrudin Abdul Hamid, stated that, at this time, residents and the public in the nearby area are advised to seek a health check if they experience any suspicious symptoms.

"The police received information about an ammonia gas leak that occurred at an ice processing factory in this area, at around 10.30pm last night.

"Following the incident, the police and the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department decided to close the entire area in Perindustrian Jaya, Ara Damansara, to prevent any further adverse events," he said when contacted by Berita Harian today.

Mohamad Fakhrudin mentioned that, so far, the general public and workers in the industrial premises in that area are not allowed to enter the affected area.

"I also advise the public, especially residents in the nearby area who can smell the gas or are experiencing vomiting, to seek treatment at a nearby hospital.

"Residents experiencing health problems are also advised to report to the police," he said.

He said that air quality checks have shown ammonia readings of 200 parts per million (ppm) thus far.

The affected industrial area from the ammonia gas leak covers an area of 400 square meters.
