JERANTUT: A senior citizen died while four others including a five-month-old infant were seriously injured in fiery crash involvoing a Proton Exora multipurpose vehicle and a lorry at Km12 Jalan Jerantut-Maran near Sungai Salan here yesterday.

The 83-year-old front passenger of the MPV was killed instantly in the 1pm incident.

Jerantut district police chief Superintendent Mazlan Hassan said initial investigations revealed the MPV was driven by a 25-year-old woman, while the other people in the vehicle were believed to be her family members from Felda Gelanggi Satu here.

"Upon arrival at the scene, the driver of the MPV was likely unable to overtake the vehicle in front of her, which led to a collision with an Isuzu lorry.

"The accident resulted in the MPV catching fire. Thankfully, all the victims were brought out of the vehicle with the help of passers-by," he said in a statement here yesterday (July 10).

He said the driver and three others who were seriously injured were rushed to the emergency unit of Jerantut Hospital. They were in critical condition.

"The accident is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987," he said.
