KOTA BARU: Kelantan became the first state under Pas to dissolve its state assembly, scheduled on June 22, to pave the way for the state election.

This announcement was made by Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob at the Darulnaim complex today after the state government received consent from the Sultan of Kelantan, Sultan Muhammad V.

"I have met the Ruler to inform him about the date, and he has consented.

"After this, we will send the notice of dissolution to the state Election Commission (EC)," he told a press conference after the state executive council meeting.

Also, present at the conference were Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah and Kelantan State Assembly speaker Datuk Abdullah Yakub.

Ahmad, who is Pasir Pekan assemblyman, said it would depend on the EC to make the next move.

"Once the state assembly has been dissolved on June 22, a caretaker government will take over," he added.

Apart from Kelantan, the other two Pas-held states are Terengganu and Kedah. They expected to dissolve their state assemblies anytime from now.

Kelantan will dissolve its state assembly five days early before the June 27 deadline.

There are 45 seats in the Kelantan state assembly. Thirty-seven of these seats are held by Pas, while Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia has one seat. Barisan Nasional holds another seven seats.
