KUALA LUMPUR: A circumcision conference is set to be held in Putrajaya later this month with focus on among others, the approach In handling the procedure on 'buried penis' patients.

Gathering local and foreign keynotes speakers including those from Myanmar and Indonesia the two-day conference is also holding discussions on the latest updates on female circumcision in Malaysia to create a deeper understanding on the processes involved.

Myanmar and Indonesia are also expected to table their respective experiences on circumcision

The subject of female circumcision is constantly a subject of debate, with groups like Sisters in Islam asking the government to order a review of a 2009 fatwa by the national fatwa council that declared female circumcision compulsory.

The group had argued that other Muslim countries, including Egypt and Indonesia had issued fatwas stating that female genital mutilation was damaging to women and girls.

Last year a 22-year-old man who lost the head of his penis in a botched circumcision 12 years ago, was awarded damages, totalling RM3.1 million, after the High Court today allowed his suit against the government and four others.
