KOTA KINABALU: Thirty-six families at Kampung Tanjung Aru Baru here affected by the high tide phenomenon here last month received financial assistance from the state government.

State Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said three of the families, whose homes were completely destroyed, would receive an additional RM20,000 each to rebuild their houses.

As for the remaining 33 families, whose houses suffered major damage, Hajiji said they would receive RM10,000 each.

During the ceremony here, each household representative was also given an additional RM1,000 in cash aid.

"With the assistance and cash aid, the government is hoping to lessen the burden of the victims," he told reporters after visiting the victims' houses.

As for the victims in Kampung Forest, Sandakan, which saw the collapse of over 100 stilt houses due to a similar phenomenon, Hajiji said the state government was waiting for a full report.

"We are still waiting for a report from the Sandakan disaster committee. They do not want to build a house in that area and want to look for other appropriate areas.

"Those victims have been relocated to temporary places in low-cost housing areas."

Present during the ceremony were State Community Development and People's Welfare minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, state secretary Datuk Seri Safar Untong, Assistant Minister to Chief Minister Datuk Abidin Madingkir and Kota Kinabalu mayor Datuk Noorliza Awang Alip.
