RANTAU PANJANG: Becoming flood victims did not stop some 30 women here from celebrating International Women's Day today.

The women, who are taking shelter at SK Tok Deh flood relief centre, here, took part in a simple celebration organised by the state government.

Joining the flood victims during the celebration were the Menteri besar's wife, Datin Siti Zabidah Ab Hamid, and state Welfare, Family and Women Development Committee chairman Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi.

Mumtaz said the celebration was held in a simple ceremony which was also joined by the staff of various agencies who were on duty at the relief centre.

"Today, all women in the world are celebrating the day and we want to show that those (women) at the flood relief centre will not be left aside and therefore, we decided to organise a simple celebration here.

"Hopefully, the flood victims will enjoy and feel happy a little bit," she said.

At the event, flood victims received a small flower bunch each from Siti Zabidah and Mumtaz. They later joined the two cutting several cakes to mark the highlight of the celebration.

More than 400 flood victims remained at the centre as of this afternoon.
