KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia Agro Exposition Park (MAEPS) Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC), which was reactivated today, received its first batch of Covid-19 patients at 4.50pm.

Klang Valley Covid-19 Unified Command Centre commander Datin Dr Rohana Johan said the MAEPS PKRC, which comes under the central region zone, will be reopened in stages.

"The reopening will begin with 100 beds and will be increased to 850 beds if there is a need," said Dr Rohana, who is also Kuala Lumpur Hospital director.

Earlier, MAEPS PKRC director Dr Ferwahn Fairis Ab Karim told Berita Harian that 18 Covid-19 patients, made up of five men and 13 women aged between 18 and 60 were admitted into the facility dedicated to treating Covid-19 cases in categories 1, 2A and 2B.

The patients are from Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had said the reactivation of the MAEPS PKRC was to lessen the burden of overcrowded hospitals where patients with mild symptoms are currently warded.

He had said the decision was largely a proactive measure to ensure hospitals could continue giving non-Covid treatments such as elective medical procedures.
