MASJID TANAH: The collapsed river bank of Sungai Berembang was identified as the cause of the major floods which struck Lubok Cina and Kampung Telok Berembang, near here, yesterday.

Heavy rain from 2.30pm onwards last Friday caused the Sungai Rembau water level to rise sharply before its waters entered Sungai Berembang and caused the river bank to collapse early yesterday morning.

State Public Works, Transport, Public Facilities, Infrastructure and Flood Management Committee Chairman, Datuk Rahmad Mariman, said when the river bank collapsed, water flowed into Kampung Telok Berembang and caused the entire village to be inundated by floodwaters which at its height reached 1.5 metres.

"The excessive water load caused the river bank to collapse but we are thankful that no injuries or loss of lives were reported," he said when contacted today.

A check at the collapsed river bank location found that the rapid flow of Sungai Berembang created a new waterway to course through Kampung Telok Berembang.

A resident of Taman Wira Indah next to Kampung Telok Berembang, Fairuz Ramli, 43, said the collapsed river bank also caused a nearby park to be flooded.

"The water flow in the collapsed river bank area is quite heavy and poses danger to pedestrians or those using vehicles.

"After the river bank collapsed, Kampung Telok Berembang and Taman Wira Indah began to flood at 5am," he said.

However, water began to recede at 8am yesterday, allowing flood victims who were housed at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Lubok Cina, to return to their homes.
