BAYAN LEPAS: A man is feared drowned after he fell off the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS) at KM8.5, from Batu Kawan headed towards Batu Maung, here, today.

The victim, a 39-year-old man from Kuala Lumpur, left his car and belongings on the bridge.

Penang State Maritime director Maritime Captain Abd Razak Mohamed said the agency received information about the incident from the second bridge Traffic Control Centre at 4.40am before the search and rescue operation was launched.

He said the operation also involved the Penang Fire and Rescue Department, Batu Uban Marine Police Force and the Malaysian Civil Defence Force.

"Currently, the search area is 22.42 square nautical miles.

"The victim left his Toyota Prius car and belongings on the bridge," he said in a statement here today.

Razak said, so far, a forward base has been established near the second bridge and the search operation is continuing.
