KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) staff raised almost RM1.28 million to help the B40 group impacted by Covid-19.

The money was collected via Tabung Warga TNB Prihatin (WTP) in just eight days since its launch and will be distributed to deserving recipients soon.

TNB president and chief executive officer Datuk Ir. Baharin Din said more than 11,000 TNB staff have made voluntary salary deductions to donate towards the WTP fund.

He said the fund was set up by TNB's top management, union as well as related association presidents for TNB staff to make voluntary contributions to the cause.

"Alhamdulillah, it's been just over a week since the campaign was launched on June 9 and TNB staff have voluntarily contributed to the Tabung WTP from their June and July salaries," he said.

Baharin said he is confident that the amount will continue to increase before the last date on July 15.

"We will match every ringgit donated by TNB staff so that the fund benefits more people. Having grown up in a challenging urban environment, I truly understand the difficulties faced by those who have lost their income or their jobs due to the current economic situation," he said adding that he believed the rest at TNB also felt the same.

He said the cash distribution will be made by hand or via online transfer depending on the standard operating procedures (SOP) recommended at the time.

"The recipients are selected from the B40 group comprising of the disabled and those listed under e-Kasih, welfare department and PPRT (Under the Ministry of Women and Community Development), State Zakat centres and based on needy cases recommended by TNB staff."

He said since the beginning of this year, TNB has also extended RM9.5 million assistance to more than 10,000 people from the B40 group for rebuilding and repairing houses; buying food supplies and basic necessities and providing pocket money.
