SETIU: The first wave of floods have hit Terengganu with 26 people in Langkap evacuated since 1am today.

Two evacuation centres: the Sungai Lerek civic centre and one in Kampung Bukit Nyior Pelong, have been opened to shelter the 26 evacuees from six families.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt-Col (PA) Che Adam Abd Rahman said his men were on red alert as continuous heavy rain was expected throughout the day.

"The road from Chalok to Telaga Papan at Kampung Lubuk Panjang is under 0.38 metres of water over a 300-metre stretch and is now closed to all light vehicles," he said.

Che Adam also said that Sungai Nerus at Kampung Langkap has breached its warning level of 20 metres and Sungai Nerus measured at Kampung Bukit was rising but still below the cautious level of 12 metres.

He said the rivers were rising and warned those in flood prone areas to be prepared for evacuation and follow Standard Operating Procedures.
