SETIU: Residents from several villages in Langkap have started moving their prized possessions to safer locations as they prepare for floods following continuous heavy rain since 2am today.

Sungai Pelong and Sungai Nerus have risen but not yet overflowed, however, villagers in Kampong Tok Nandong, Pelong and Seri Kenangan are not taking any chances.

While some shops are still open, the operators have decided to close them soon as they are worried that they may be cut off from their homes when the rivers overflow.

Yusman Heri Mansor, 49, a father of seven children, said his family would be moving to his in-laws' home on higher ground as soon as possible.

"We cannot stop what's coming (the flood) but we have to evacuate early to ensure everyone in the family is safe," said Yusman who has a nine-month-old child.

Yusman, a farmer, said every year his family would be affected and as such, he decided to move out before it got worse.

"Residents here are always prepared for the worst. This year is no different.

"Based on the changing weather patterns and the observation of the water level in Tasik Kenyir, we can expect a big flood this year," he added.

Mak Limah, a warung operator located at Pelong inter-section, said she would start evacuating her family in Kampung Tok Nandong to homes of relatives on higher ground.

"It is not safe to open for business at this location (Pelong inter-section) because it will be inundated under four feet of water.

"No one can move in or out of Pelong when the flood hits. Already there are signs of a big flood coming as the water level is flowing dangerously fast and rising rapidly.

"When water from rivers in the interior starts flows downstream thats when it gets really dangerous," she said adding that the water flows from Gunung Sarok, Gunung Padang and Hulu Payong.

Villagers, she said, have started stocking food supplies as all roads leading to Pelong would be inaccessible.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt-Col (PA) Che Adam Abd Rahman said his men were ready for action to evacuate flood victims.

He said his men would be on the alert and respond to emergencies but accidents could be avoided if the public did not court danger by wading through flooded areas.

"Be ready to evacuate homes when the situation calls for it. At the moment, we are monitoring the water levels in all major rivers," he added.
