SHAH ALAM: On a recent Saturday morning when many were enjoying the weekend, one man headed to several playgrounds in his Bukit Jelutong neighbourhood armed with a pail of water, sponges and cleaning detergent.

What was Mustaqim Kumar Abdullah Sooria’s mission?

It was to thoroughly clean the community’s outdoor playgrounds’ equipment in an effort to rid them of possible contamination of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Mustaqim was the lone ranger in his noble efforts.

In a Facebook posting, Mustaqim said he was even ridiculed for his actions – but that did not deter him from scrubbing down the playgrounds’ equipment, as he was genuinely concerned for the wellbeing of the young ones around him.

“This morning, many people laughed at me because I was cleaning the children’s playgrounds around the U8 neighbourhood in Bukit Jelutong.

“Do you know why I cleaned the children’s playgrounds? The 2019-nCoV has infected thousands of people from other countries as well as ours, and it has taken hundreds of lives.

“(I hope) this infectious disease will not spread to our children.

“I do this voluntarily with the intention of helping the Bukit Jelutong community. We should not take the 2019-nCoV lightly,” he wrote in his post which has received over 18,000 likes.

Mustaqim’s selfless initiative earned praise and expressions of gratitude from many netizens.

Facebook user Joyce See Kai Xin said,” Those who laughed at you, you can ignore. Truly respect your selflessness and love. If every citizen can do their part like you, Malaysia will have less man-made disasters. Thank you so much!.”

Khalis Kamel said, “Good effort. Ignore those people. Allah will repay you for this good deed.”

Milk Yong wrote,” You're a hero! Respect.”
