KUALA LUMPUR: Some of the Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Bhd staff will be rehired by the company that has taken over the newspaper publisher, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

He said although Utusan Melayu, which publishes Utusan Malaysia and Kosmo! newspapers would cease operations, there is still hope.

“Utusan will be closed, there will be a new company to take over Utusan, but as far as the workers are concerned, some of them will be roped in to work with the new Utusan.”

The stable has been acquired by Aurora Mulia Sdn Bhd and Utusan executive chairman Datuk Abd Aziz Sheikh Fadzir reportedly said that the publications would be relaunched in the near future.

It was reported that the final working day for Utusan employees was yesterday while their employment would end on Oct 31 this year.

Aurora Mulia is linked to businessman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar AlBukhary and has recently surfaced in listed media group Media Prima Bhd, with its shareholding in the latter amounting to 31.22 per cent to-date.
