KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has introduced an initiative to improve the command of Bahasa Melayu among students by instilling the culture of reading newspapers in schools.

It said the national schools in the peninsula have been urged to subscribe to the main Malay newspapers in the country, namely, Berita Harian, Utusan Malaysia and Sinar Harian.

"The purchase can be done by the schools using the existing allocation.

"The ministry believes that the initiative can help improve command of the national language among students," it said in a statement.
