KUALA LUMPUR: Calls for a consumer boycott of food delivery service Foodpanda was not discussed in Cabinet, said Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The prime minister said the remarks, made by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, did not represent the government’s views on the matter.

“That is his opinion. He did not discuss it in Cabinet. Perhaps he has a reason for the statement,” Dr Mahathir said at the Parliament lobby here, today.

In a tweet yesterday, Syed Saddiq said consumers should bring down “arrogant” corporations, just as they can vote out elected representatives.

“Arrogance is not the solution. Only support corporations which are fair to workers and consumers,” he tweeted.

Last week, more than 200 freelance Foodpanda riders staged protests at two locations against a new payment scheme for all riders outside Klang Valley, which they claimed would reduce their income.

In response, Foodpanda Malaysia said the new regional payment scheme for riders outside the Klang Valley would reward them based on efficiency.

This new scheme, which took effect on Sept 30, covered about 3,900 or 30 per cent of riders.
