PUTRAJAYA: Latheefa Koya today chaired her first Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) meeting as its chief commissioner.

The meeting was attended by all of the commission's departments and state directors and was meant as a get-to-know and briefing session pertaining to MACC's organisation, operations and prevention efforts.

Latheefa was appointed to head MACC effective June 1.

A spokesman from the commission said the meeting started at 9.30am and ended some three hours later.

"Also at the meeting, former MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Shukri Abdull also asked for all departments and state directors to give their full cooperation and support to Latheefa in efforts to combat corruption and abuse of power.

"Throughout the meeting, various matters were discussed and shared amongst all present in ensuring that efforts to combat corruption are strengthened," the spokesman said when contacted.

Also present was MACC's deputy commissioner of operations Datuk Seri Azam Baki.

Previously, Mohd Shukri expressed his confidence in Latheefa's capabilities as the commission's chief commissioner if she held on to being fearless against pressure and those with interests.

Last week, Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted he selected Latheefa to helm MACC because she is very strict and sees what is the truth.

"...we need somebody who has a strong character," Dr Mahathir had said.

Latheefa, a lawyer and formerly the executive director of Lawyers for Liberty, replaced Mohd Shukri after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to his application to shorten his service contract which was supposed to end on May 17, 2020.
