KUALA LUMPUR: THE scheduled water disruption in the Klang Valley began yesterday, with up to four million residents in 577 areas expected to face dry taps in their households for the next three days.

However, the 86-hour dry period announced by the authorities could be trimmed, with works to upgrade the Sungai Selangor Phase 2 Water Treatment Plant (LRA SSP2) progressing at a rapid pace.

Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari gave his assurance that the water supply disruption in the Klang Valley would not last more than 72 hours.

He said supply to half of the affected areas would resume in less than 48 hours.

“The three days we had scheduled is the forecast of the worst case scenario, which most likely will affect Kuala Langat, the locality furthest away from LRA SSP2 in Bukit Badong, Bestari Jaya.

“Water supply will resume on the second day, but for Kuala Langat, it may take up to 76 or 78 hours.

“If all goes well, water reconnection to the last house will happen on the third day,” Amirudin said after launching the Selangor Economic Seminar and the Wholesale and Retail Trade Census 2019 at the Shah Alam Convention Centre yesterday.

The disruption affects 620,835 Syabas account holders, which translates into 4.1 million people. The areas involved are Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Gombak, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor.

Air Selangor Sdn Bhd said the upgrading works were 70 per cent complete.

Its customer relations and communications department head, Abdul Raof Ahmad, said works were progressing as scheduled.

“Air Selangor is working to ensure that the upgrading works are completed as soon as possible so that water can be channelled to the affected areas as soon as possible,” he said.

The National Water Services Commission (SPAN), in a statement, said work at the Sungai Selangor water treatment plant (SSP2) had begun.

“Air Selangor workers have been at the location for the past few days to ensure that all goes according to plan so that consumers can enjoy treated water supply according to schedule, or better yet, earlier than expected.

“Updates on the work being carried out at the treatment plant will be shared from time to time,” read the statement.

Klang Valley residents had, since being informed of the water disruption, been buying up containers to ensure that their households have water supply.

Air Selangor has deployed water tankers to critical areas, such as hospitals and dialysis centres. Air Selangor has 82 regular tankers and 17 large tankers, all of which will be mobilised during this period.

Those affected by water disruption can receive help beginning 8am tomorrow as Air Selangor will open 10 service centres and nine stand pipes.

It will also provide 106 static water tanks on premises considered critical, such as hospitals and other strategic locations.

The stand pipes will be located at Ar Rahimah mosque in Sri Andalas for Klang and Persiaran Selangor in Seksyen 16 for Shah Alam.

In Petaling district, stand pipes will be provided near SK Desa Tasik Jalan 11/146, Bandar Tasik Selatan, Sungai Besi; PJS 3, Taman Medan; the Sungai Buloh Forestry Department office in Jalan Subang and the Zone 23 council member’s office in Jalan SS9/10.

Here, those affected can get water from stand pipes at the Sungai Besi Futsal Court, while those in Kuala Selangor can go to Jalan PPAJ 2/8 or Jalan PPAJ 3 at Alam Jaya Commercial Centre.

Industrial customers who want to buy water can do so at Air Selangor district offices. However, they will need to arrange for their own tankers to transport the water.

They can buy water at Lebuh Sungai Kapar Indah (Klang); Jalan TPK2/2 Taman Perindustrian Kinrara and Jalan 1/1 Taman Metro (Petaling); and, Jalan Mutiara 1, Taman Selayang Mutiara (Gombak).

For Hulu Langat and Kuala Lumpur, water can be bought at the Hulu Langat Agriculture office in Batu 11, Jalan Cheras-Kajang, while for Kuala Selangor users can do so in Jalan Bukit Belimbing, Kampung Permatang.
