GEORGE TOWN: The developer of a condominium here which stirred controversy when lights on its façade formed a giant cross recently has broken its silence.

A spokesman for the developer of the Grace Residence in Jelutong categorically denied today that there was any hidden motive behind the incident, saying that its workers were simply testing the condominium’s lights.

“We did not even have the intention of (activating the lights in such a way that) they would form the cross,” added the Nova Mulia Development Sdn Bhd spokesman, who declined to be identified for this report.

The spokesman told NSTP that the lighting exercise was carried out just once.

“We had no intention of hurting any party,” he added.

The controversy erupted because some see the cross as the Christian crucifix, and the symbol was visible over a wide area.

The incident prompted Penang Mufti Datuk Seri Dr Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor to call for an explanation on the matter by the state government and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

However, Wan Salim said that the matter can be resolved amicably if all parties are willing to be tolerant of each other.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that he is still awaiting a report on the incident from state secretary Datuk Seri Farizan Darus.

“We are still waiting for the report and we will keep you updated,” Chow said.
