GEORGE TOWN: Penang government is planning for a bicycle and pedestrian lane to connect Gurney Wharf to Batu Ferringhi beach.

State Local Government, Housing, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the lane was partly completed.

The route from Gurney Wharf from Seri Tanjung Pinang had been successfully built and the project had ‘Green Connectivity’ concept.

Eco-deck structure was planned to be built by the beach of Flamingo Hotel until Shangrila’s Rasa Sayang Hotel beach, Batu Ferringhi with a distance of 6km.

“The eco-deck structure has platform, support structure below it and railings for safety purposes.

“The eco-deck is 3.5 metres width which is two metres for bicycle and 1.5 metres for pedestrian lane,” he said at a press conference after visiting the Gurney Wharf Bicycle Lane Master Plan at Persiaran Gurney here with Penang Island City Council (MBPP) mayor Datuk Yew Tung Seang.

Elaborating, he said that the master plan was expected to be completed by year 2020 and the current progress was at 90 per cent.

He said that out of the proposed 200km, 180km had been built involving RM34.8 million.

“Apart from the Seri Tanjung Pinang to Flamingo lane, another one is also being built at Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.

“This 2.5km lane costs RM3.4 million,” he said.
