KANGAR: Malaysians are urged to change the perception on the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) from being an institution that merely provides education loans to a place that nurtures the savings habit.

Its chairman Wan Saiful Wan Jan said it was time for the public to discard the old notion that had somewhat encouraged the habit of borrowing among the people.

He said PTPTN was an institution which offered good savings schemes.

“The letter ‘T’ in the acronym ‘PTPTN’ itself means tabung (fund). We want to create a different culture, hence the organisation of savings week (minggu menabung) launched yesterday (Friday).

“Starting savings early through the National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) would significantly reduce the overall amount of the education loan, which is way better than servicing a full loan,” he said after launching the Family Empowerment Dialogue at the Civil Defence Force complex today.

Wan Saiful said as of Aug 31, a total of 3.67 million accounts were opened with savings amounted to RM3.8 billion.

“I urge parents who have yet to plan (their children’s) education financing to start saving today,” he said.
