IPOH: Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Nga Kor Ming today expressed his disappointment over the decision of opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to turn down the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman’s position.

“I have no idea as to why he refused to take up the position. To be a PAC chairman, it is indeed a prestige position and the only person who has the rights to summon anyone (to be present) in PAC meeting.

“It is also the only position which has rights to call witnesses including the prime minister, inspector general of police to give the statement at the PAC meeting.

“I feel disappointed; why (did) the opposition leader refused to hold this position? It plays important roles in check and balance. Let the people judge to evaluate, what is he afraid of?,” said Nga, who is also Perak DAP chairman, in a press conference after attending the 14th state legislative assembly at Bangunan Perak Darul Ridzuan here today.

On a separate matter, Nga reminded Perak state legislative assembly Speaker, Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham to be strict in assembly meeting so that the opposition members would not take advantage of his good-nature.

“He is too kind, which resulted in some of the opposition members to take advantage and misused the time allocated for them. It was clearly shown that they (opposition assemblymen) do not want to ask questions but rather make a fuss.

“It took about 40 minutes just to answer one question. This also shows that they are not fulfilling their promise to be a constructive opposition.

“Ngeh is too kind, and he is trying to accommodate both the reasonable and unreasonable requests made by the opposition,” he added.
