GEORGETOWN: Raya came early for 70 students from the Permatang Damar Laut Community-based Rehabilitation centre (PDK Permatang Damar Laut) in Batu Maung, who received kuih and duit raya from the Penang Youth Muslim League Confederation (Pertubuhan Belia Liga Muslim or PBLM).

PBLM president, Noor Mohamed SPK Mohd Abdullah, said the programme was part of the organisation’s initiatives to help the needy.

“This is the fifth year we are organising such event. Apart from contributing cash and items, we also carry out gotong-royong at the centre to repaint the building and raise funds for the children, among others.

“We have been actively working with the centre to ensure that the children are not being left behind especially during festive seasons such as raya.

“We hope that our small contribution would bring cheer to the occupants here, who are disabled people and children with down syndrome,” he said.

During the event, Noor Mohamed also handed RM1,000 cash contribution to the centre which was accepted by its principle, Fatimah Kader Bacha.

One of the students, Mohd Noor Abdul Rahman, 26, from Batu Maung, said he was grateful for the visit.

"I will eat the kuih raya with my family and save the duit raya I received from PBLM in my bank account,” he said.
