BAGAN DATUK: Perak has given the green light for the Bagan Datuk district to have its own local authority.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said as such all local authority matters in the Bagan Datuk district which had previously been under the Teluk Intan Municipal Council (MPTI) will be taken over by the newly formed Bagan Datuk District Council (MDBD).

"Alhamdulillah, Bagan Datuk is not just a district, two weeks ago the Perak State Exco approved for MDBD to take over from MPTI.

Prior to this, local authority matters in Bagan Datuk came under MPTI’s administration in the Hilir Perak district, even though the district and land administration had been separate after Bagan Datuk’s district status in 2016.

"So, we will manage our own (administrative affairs of the local authority) without having to depend on others" he said at a Charity Dinner in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of SK Sungai Sumun (SKSS), tonight.

Zahid, who is also Member of Parliament for Bagan Datuk, also approved a RM1 million allocation for physical development and rehabilitation of infrastructure in SKSS.

He said the allocation was given to appreciate the role of the school which had produced many figures in various fields since its establishment on January 1, 1819.

He said among the former pupils of the SKSS were the State Human Resources, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Rungkup State Assemblyman Datuk Shahrul Zaman Yahya and Bagan District Education Officer Datuk Sulaiman Samsuddin.

Both were present at the event.
