MIRI: A 23-year-old man caused panic at the Miri Airport on Tuesday when he appeared to be in possession of a hand grenade.

But it turned out to be a false alarm, as the ‘hand grenade’ proved to be a lighter.

In the 6pm incident, security officers were alarmed when their scanning machine detected the object in the man’s bag while he was undergoing security checks to enter the airport’s departure hall.

The man was supposed to board AirAsia flight AK5013 bound for Johor Baru, scheduled for departure at 7.30pm.

“The man was subsequently arrested for questioning. It was (later) established that the object is actually a lighter,” said Miri district police chief Assistant Commissioner Lim Meng Seah.

Initial investigations revealed that the man had purchased the lighter in Johor Baru.

Lim said the case is being investigated under Section 32 of the Arms Act 1960.
