KUALA LUMPUR: The magistrates' court in Miri fined a grandfather RM700 in default two weeks in jail for possessing an illegal lottery ticket.

According to the Borneo Post, Magistrate Randu Rangen found Hafitz Adeni, aged 60, guilty based on his own admission of guilt to a charge under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

Under the section, the offender may face a fine of up to RM5,000, a maximum jail term of six months, or both.

Borneo Post reported that Hafitz was found to be in possession of the illegal lottery ticket at a premises in Tudan on March 16.

He pleaded for leniency with the court, saying that he was a first time offender with five children and five grandchildren.

Hafitz also paid the RM700 fine. Hafitz was unrepresented, while Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman prosecuted the case.
